Our History

Santa Maria College was founded by the Sisters of the Good Samaritan of the Order of St Benedict in Northcote in 1904. At Santa Maria College, we cultivate independent, reflective and compassionate women with an eagerness to contribute to our world. We are very proud of our 114-year tradition which has seen us offer a rigorous and holistic education to generations of young women.

Santa Maria College is proud to offer the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Program (IBMYP). Full accreditation was achieved in 2014. The IBMYP is a rigorous teaching framework centred on inquiry-based learning that encourages students to become creative, critical and reflective thinkers. It fosters the development of skills for communication, intercultural understanding and global engagement - qualities that are essential for life in the 21st century. We offer a plethora of curriculum subjects from Years 7 to12, including VCE, VET and VCAL as senior pathways.

Living in Community

We are passionate about girls’s’ education, motivating each student to cultivate her gifts and talents to the fullest. Santa Maria students receive a holistic education which nurtures them emotionally, physically, intellectually and spiritually. Developing a ‘student voice’ and leadership qualities in young women is important tofor us. Our pastoral framework affirms respectful relationships, nestled within a restorative practice model. Our new Village model for Years 7-/8, 9-/10 and , 11-/12 invites all students to feel a sense of connection and a place to belong as both individuals and learners within a space of shared guardianship.

Digital Technologies

Santa Maria acknowledges the role of digital technologies as a tool to support learning. The use of a device will help develop our students into skilled users of digital technologies not only duringfor their time at Santa Maria but also as citizens of a 21st century world. An important part of this program will be the use of the G Suite for Education. This learning platform allows students greater autonomy in their learning as well as improved communication with teachers. In addition to this, such learning tools allow more effective engagement with the global community which can so richly enhance and extend student learning, allowing students to access information, expertise and insights in an engaging, safe and discerning way. This collaborative and flexible learning environment is transforming the way students create , collaborate and curate their knowledge and their learning.

Our dynamic co-curricular program includes: student leadership opportunities, an annual school production, wide ranging music ensembles including a variety of choirs, social justice action, public speaking and debating, an expansive sSports program, immersions programs ((Central Australia and Philippines)) and overseas educational tours (Japan and Italy). The College also offers participates in the Duke of Edinburgh program, offering the award at bronze, silver and gold with a very high success rate, of which, our success rate is very high.

Message from the Principal

Santa Maria College offers a community that knows and cares for each student within an environment of inquiry-based teaching that ignites a love of learning and life. As a Catholic school, students are nurtured in a faith that has shown them in word and action what it means to live a life for the other - to be people of compassion, forgiveness and healing and yet always within a framework of hope. As a school over 110 years old, we often talk about the Santa spirit that pervades our community. Although difficult to articulate, it is a sense of welcome, hospitality, warmth and respect for each other. It is a sense of adventure, earthiness, academic rigour and resilience. This is the hallmark of Santa Maria that I cherish? come and see for yourself!
