About Carey Baptist Grammar School

Carey Baptist Grammar School is a Christian co-educational school, offering education from Early Learning to Year 12. Carey works in partnership with families to develop wise, independent, motivated young people who will engage with and lead in their local, national and global communities.
As one of Australia's leading co-educational schools, Carey has a 50/50 gender balance that fosters the development of confidence, communication skills and self-esteem in both girls and boys. Students participate in community service projects, study different cultures, religions and beliefs, learn the importance of social justice and human rights, and are encouraged to respect and appreciate the world beyond their own experience.
Carey is known for being innovative and leading the way in best-practice teaching and learning, which supports the strong academic results and personal development of each student. Carey’s approach to Student Centred Learning is a philosophy that requires students to be active, responsible participants in their own learning, with the teacher working in partnership with families as a mentor, facilitator and guide.
The school’s commitment to Positive Education is directed by a strengths-based approach to wellbeing. Students at all year levels are explicitly taught positive interventions that build greater personal happiness and resilience. The school is structured to ensure that every student is well supported by our pastoral care system.
The curriculum at Carey provides something to challenge, stimulate and encourage every student. In Years 11 and 12, students study either the International Baccalaureate (IB) or VCE. A wide range of subject choices and extension activities are offered, including Vocational Education and Training (VET) and University Extension. In Years 7 to 9, our curriculum provides students with grounding in traditional academic subjects and offers a range of electives to foster individual interests and abilities. Our Junior Schools take a collaborative, balanced approach to learning that includes both instructional and inquiry-based teaching.
An extensive co-curricular offering complements our academic programs. Carey offers coaching and competition in 25 sports, as well as a range of other activities that foster self-confidence, leadership, independence and teamwork.
In 2016, Carey opened its Centre for Learning and Innovation. This outstanding development features high quality, contemporary learning spaces, science laboratories, a new Information Resource Centre and a United Nations room. The design and construction of this building has been a careful and detailed process that has created an attractive and functional space where students learn, develop and grow in the three key areas that underpin the 10 Attributes of a Carey Positive Learner: Relational, Thinking and Self-management skills.

Message from the Principal

As the father of two daughters, both now Old Carey Grammarians, I understand the hopes, questions and anxieties many parents face when considering a new school for their children. I can confidently assure you, from my own experience, and from welcoming so many new Carey families in my time as Principal, that Carey is a friendly and inclusive community.

Schools are primarily about young people, and especially about helping them become the best they can be. We offer our girls and boys every opportunity to grow into communicative, creative, critically-thinking, curious and community-minded young adults. When Carey's students learn how to get the best from themselves, they will be able to give their best to others – their families, friends, work colleagues and the communities they serve.

I am incredibly proud of our school and the people who make up its community. Please enjoy taking the time to explore the wonderful opportunities that we can offer your child.

Student Profile

Name: Claire Goldsmith

Year Level: Year 12

Favourite Subject: Chinese

This is my 15th year at Carey and it has become like a second home for me. Throughout my time here, I have been offered countless opportunities, support from both teachers and friends, and a place where I have been able to realise and chase my dreams.

The Carey community really does accept everyone, allowing each student to feel a sense of belonging. This supportive environment also provides a place for students to learn about a variety of topics, including themselves.

This acceptance has emphasised my passion of learning Mandarin and my love for visual arts. Carey has allowed me to become well-rounded and has let me, alongside many others, explore and excel in multiple areas – evidenced by Carey’s involvement in the International Baccalaureate.

Ultimately, my school has always offered a great deal of support and an atmosphere to discover my next journey.
